What to Expect at Your Appointment

We hope to make your visit as smooth as possible while providing a full and thorough exam. Here’s what you can expect at your eye exam:

  • An assistant will call you in shortly after check in.
  • The assistant will perform an initial exam (20 minutes), which includes checking vision, muscle exam, pupil check, and any other necessary diagnostic testing.
  • After the initial exam, your child’s pupils will be dilated. This is an important part of the exam as it allows for an in depth look at the back of the eye as well as an accurate assessment of vision for prescription glasses, if needed. Your child will experience sensitivity to light and blurred vision for an average of 4-6 hours after dilation. (Note: It is normal for this effect to last up to 24 hours, especially in lighter eyes.)
  • You will be sent back to the waiting room while the drops take effect. Your child can watch a movie, color, or play while you wait.
  • When you are called back by an assistant, the doctor will see you and complete your exam.

Note: This is a brief description of what you can expect but can change to ensure we are meeting your child’s needs. Your visit might be shorter or longer depending on any additional time or testing necessary to provide the best care for your child.
