The Connecticut Children’s Vestibular and Balance Program is a program that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children with dizziness and balance disorders. Your child will benefit from evaluation and treatment by audiologists and physical therapists who are experts in balance disorders in children.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment please call 860.545.9642.

Symptoms of a vestibular disorder can vary depending on your child’s age and can be difficult to recognize. You may suspect a vestibular disorder if you notice some or all of these signs:

  • Clumsiness
  • Frequent unexplained falls
  • Difficulty walking in the dark
  • Inability to ride a two wheeled bike
  • Head tilt
  • Fluttering eye movements
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Periodic episodes of nausea and vomiting
  • Delayed milestones

If you notice any combination of these symptoms, call us to schedule an evaluation.

Your appointment will be scheduled for two (2) hours. Depending on the age of your child, it may take less time than this to complete testing. This allows for adequate breaks between tests, and repeating of tests if needed.

For the day of testing please note the following:

  • DO NOT take sedatives/tranquillizers or any anti-dizziness mediations (e.g. meclizine) at least 48 hours before testing. If you NEED to take a medication as instructed by a physician, you should continue to take and inform us on the day of testing. If you have any questions or concerns about the medications you are taking please call our office prior to your testing.
  • DO NOT wear any eye makeups (e.g. eyeliner or mascara). Other facial makeups should be kept to minimum and may be removed during testing.
  • DO wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move around in
  • DO have a light meal before coming in, however try to avoid heavy foods or not eating if possible.

For patients old enough to drive themselves, it is recommended a parent or family member come with you to drive you home

Parents are encouraged to bring any item, e.g. favorite toys that may comfort your child. Please do not bring food to eat during appointment, however light snacks are OK for after.

Please avoid bringing in younger siblings with the patient if possible to prevent any interference with the clinical testing.
