Eligibility
- All new graduate nurses and nurses with less than 12 months of experience hired into a Registered Nurse position at Connecticut Children’s participate in the Nurse Residency Program. See the Nursing Careers page for available positions. New graduate nurses can apply before graduation and passing NCLEX. Application to the “New Graduate Staff Nurse Positions” and individual department specific nurse positions is encouraged.
- There is no specific Nurse Residency application process.
Goals
- Enhance self-confidence and feelings of competency in the new nurse
- Strengthen the new nurse’s commitment to nursing
- Identify and address individual learning needs to supplement unit-based learning
- Incorporate evidence-based practice linked to patient safety, team member satisfaction and family-centered care
- Mentor novice nurses in the areas of delegation, stress management, time management, critical thinking and self-care practices
- Enhance clinical skill development
- Provide simulation experiences
- Discuss opportunities for clinical advancement and professional development
Outcomes
- Complete an evidence-based practice project
- Develop a peer support network
- Increased confidence in clinical practice as evidenced by Casey-Fink Survey
